1. Placement and Ground Surface
Ensura a stable and level surface when placing a planter.
If used on a terrace or balcony, it is important to check beforehand whether the weight of the filled planter (soil, plants and water) may cause any structural load issues.
2. Drainage
All Cortori planters are equipped with standard drainage holes. For optimal water management, a proper layering system inside the planter is essential.
Start with a drainage layer at the bottom, using materials such as hydro pellets, lava rock or crushed stone. Place a water-permeable root cloth on top to prevent potting soil from sinking into the drainage layer and obstructing water flow.
Tip: Place the planter on feet or risers. This improves drainage underneath and prevents moisture build-up or staining on the surface below.
3. Filling the Planter
Proper filling is essential for healthy root growth and good water balance. This prevents both waterlogging and drying out:
- Start with a drainage layer of at least 10 cm (see above), then add a root cloth.
- Choose light, well-draining potting soil suited to your plants (e.g. acidic soil for rhododendrons).
- Add compost or fertiliser if needed, depending on the plant species.
4. Additional Tips
- Pay attention to planter depth: allow at least 30-40 cm for perennials or shrubs, and 50-60 cm for small trees. This ensures sufficient space for root development.
- Consider using an automated drip system if the planter is large or difficult to reach for watering.
- Mulch the surface with bark or gravel to reduce evaporation.
