1. Placement and surface

Ensure a stable and level surface when placing a planter.

When used on a terrace or balcony, it is important to check in advance that the weight of the filled planter (soil, plants and water) does not cause any structural load.

2. Drainage

All Cortori planters are fitted with drainage holes as standard. For optimal water management, a proper filling structure is essential.

Start with a 10-20 cm drainage layer at the bottom, using for example clay pebbles, lava stone, or crushed rubble. Place a permeable root cloth on top to prevent soil from sinking into the drainage layer and blocking water flow.

Tip: Ideally place the planter on legs or wheels. This improves drainage underneath the planter and prevents moisture build-up or staining on the surface.

3. Filling the planter
A correct filling method is essential for healthy root growth and proper water balance. This prevents both waterlogging and dehydration:

  • Start with a 10-20 cm drainage layer (see above), then place a root cloth.
  • Choose a light, well-draining potting soil suitable for plants (e.g. acidic soil for rhododendrons.
  • Optionally add extra compost or fertiliser, depending on the plant species.

4. Additional tips

  • Pay attention to the planter depth: allow at least 30-40 cm for perennials or shrubs, 50-60 cm for small trees, so the roots have enough room to grow.
  • Consider an automated drip irrigation system if the planter is large or difficult to reach for watering.
  • Mulch the top with bark or gravel to reduce evaporation.

Customer Questions
What is Corten steel?
Corten steel is a durable type of weathering steel that develops a protective rust layer. This layer gives the material its warm, natural appearance and also protects it against further corrosion. As a result, it is low-maintenance, strong, and ideal for use in gardens or architecture.
How long does it take for Corten steel products to develop a rusty colour?
Within a few weeks, the first rusty colour will appear, and after a few months the characteristic warm orange-brown shade will be fully developed. The exact speed depends on the weather conditions.
How can I make Corten steel rust faster?
Corten steel rusts naturally through exposure to the elements, but if you want to speed up the process, you can treat it with a mixture of water, salt and vinegar. Spray or brush this regularly onto the steel and allow it to dry outdoors. Repeat until the desired rust layer has formed. Make sure the steel can dry sufficiently between treatments, as it is the alternation of wet and dry that accelerates rust formation.
What makes the design of a Cortori planter different from other Corten steel planters?
Cortori planters stand out thanks to a refined and carefully considered design. The folded edge at the top is smaller, giving the planter a more elegant look. Thanks to our unique production method, the panels fit together with exceptional precision, leaving no wide seams and guaranteeing the smallest visible gap on the market. In addition, Cortori planters are the only ones with invisible wheels. These are perfectly integrated into the design, making the planter easy to move without compromising on aesthetics. Finally, Cortori planters are rolled, which ensures a more even and attractive rust colour compared to standard Corten steel planters.
Do I need tools to assemble the planter?
All the tools you need to assemble the planter are included in the package. You therefore do not need any additional tools for assembly.
How do we package the planters you order?
The planters are neatly packaged in boxes, with all panels and loose parts organised together.
Orders are delivered by parcel services, unless it concerns a large number of planters. In that case, the order will be delivered on a pallet.
Is a Corten steel planter frost-resistant?
Yes, Corten steel is frost-resistant. The material withstands cold temperatures and does not crack or split due to frost.
Can I leave Corten steel planters outside all year round?
Yes, Corten steel is specially developedfor outdoor use and can remain outside all year round without any problems.
Are Corten steel planters watertight, or do I need to provide drainage?
Yes, our planters come with drainage holes as standard, allowing excess water to drain away and keeping your plants healthy. The use of a root cloth is recommended to prevent soil from blocking the drainage holes. For sensitive plants or on roof terraces, additional insulation may be useful to limit temperature fluctuations.
Is Corten steel sustainable and recyclable?
Absolutely. Corten steel is a highly durable material and fully recyclable. Thanks to its protective rust layer, it will last for many years.
Can a Corten steel planter also be placed on a balcony or roof terrace?
Yes, but pay attention to the weight of the planter, especially when filled with soil and plants. Also make sure that no rust water can run off and cause stains on the surface.
Which plants are most suitable for a Corten steel planter?
Almost all plants can grow in a Corten steel planter. Ornamental grasses, perennials, lavender, boxwood, or small trees are often chosen. Do take into account the depth and size of the planter.
How much weight can the planters with wheels support?
Each wheel has a load capacity of 80 kg. This ensures that the planters remain stable and easy to move, even when filled with heavy soil and plants.
